Galong Retreat Centre
St Clement’s Retreat and Conference Centre, a mission of the Redemptorists, is located in Galong NSW, a little over an hour’s drive from the centre of Canberra. Set in more than 300 hectares of rural land, the centre’s peaceful location provides an ideal setting for conferences, workshops, seminars and religious retreats.
The tradition of hospitality to all began at Galong when Irish transportee Edward ‘Ned’ Ryan settled there in the late 1820s. The Ryans introduced new forms of agricultural practice and these resulted in wealth and success for them and the wider community. Through the will of Ned’s son John Nagle Ryan, the property was passed onto the Redemptorist Congregation who established a monastery and a juvenate named for St Clement Hofbauer in 1918.
About 2000 young men were educated at Galong before the college closed in 1975 and a retreat house was established. The Ryan legacy includes examples of interesting architecture, some of which has survived for almost 160 years and the Redemptorists, who have added to the substantial group of buildings evident today.
St Clement’s main conference room can comfortably seat 100 people in theatre style seating. Two breakout rooms facilitate smaller group activities, while a verandah with kitchen facilities offers access to the patio and cloister.
A range of facilities and presentation aids are included in the main conference room booking fee which covers access to a data or overhead projector, sound system, wireless microphone, television, DVD and video player, whiteboard, wireless Internet connectivity, writing materials and continuous coffee and tea.
The old homestead (Galong House) and the Gartlan Room in the Monastery building offer space for more intimate conferences or gatherings. To make a booking, or learn more about the facilities, please call (02) 6380 5222 or email St Clement’s at firstname.lastname@example.org.
