Archdiocesan refugee response update
Preparations for the arrival of thousands of refugees in the coming months are continuing, as the Archdiocese looks to provide as much assistance as possible to those in need.
During November, the Archbishop’s Refugee Committee (ARC) met with staff from the Department of Social Services, to discuss the proposed resettlement process.
While the number of refugees to be resettled within the Archdiocese are not yet known, it is possible that parishes and individuals will be able to assist by providing accommodation, the ARC’s Victor Dunn said.
“The key contractor for the Government in these circumstances is Marist Youth Care,” Mr Dunn said.
“The ARC is in communication with Marist Youth Care and will advise parishes and agencies how best they may support the resettlement process once the situation is clear.”
The refugees will initially be processed in places such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, Mr Dunn said. They will also undertake a variety of checks and assessments before they reach Australia.
It is believed that the initial cohort of refugees will most likely include a high number of women and children.
Parishes and individuals wishing to assist or donate to the Archdiocesan refugee fund can do so through our Archdiocesan Refugee Fund specifically set up for this cause. Please contact the ARC: refugees@cg.org.au if you require any further information.
