“Prompt Me”
15 February 2018
Christmas has come and gone. January is done. Lent is suddenly upon us.
Lent. It means springtime. This imagery applies more to the northern hemisphere than to us living, as we are, in the “Great South Land of the Holy Spirit.”
Still, we will accept Lent as the time of grace that it is. The Word of God is particularly rich in Lent, but so too many of the liturgical prayers. Take this one, for instance. It is the opening prayer for today’s Mass:
Prompt our actions with your inspiration, we pray, O Lord,
and further them with your constant help,
that all we do may always begin from you
and by you be brought to completion.
Yes. That’s not bad at all. Rather than me directing proceedings “ad nauseam,” why don’t I try and let the Holy Spirit prompt me? This may actually mean a re-orientation of my life. From me – to we – to God!
That sounds like a good Lenten goal. “Come Holy Spirit,” we pray, “Prompt our actions. Further them. Complete them.”
Amen.
