Listen like a So-and-So

“So-and-so in the city” who gave his house for the Passover celebration, must have been a disciple who could listen well. He understood the significance of Jesus’ words, “My time is near.” Perhaps they had talked about his approaching death. He must have been a disciple that Jesus could share with profoundly and trust. But proximity to Jesus did not ensure proper listening. Judas, who knew a physical closeness to Jesus, could not hear him, even when he spoke directly to him. He had become close to Jesus. Our freedom to be open or closed to Jesus’ words in our lives is sobering.

Lord open my ears to hear you, I depend on your grace to keep me open and listening deeply to you.
