A Sign

9 April 2018

In the midst of war, God asks Ahaz to seek a sign. He refuses. God insists:

The Lord himself, therefore,
will give you a sign.
It is this: the maiden is with child
and will soon give birth to a son
whom she will call Immanuel,
a name which means ‘God is with us’ (Isaiah 7).

We honour this sign with the oldest prayer known to the Virgin:

We fly to your patronage of Holy Mother of God.
Despise not our prayers in our necessities,
but deliver us from present dangers,
O glorious, O blessed Virgin Mary.
Amen.
