Can you trust the King?

Mary gave herself completely to God from an early age; this is what we are celebrating in the feast of the Presentation of Mary today. Being without sin, Mary would have been unencumbered by reservations about being able to trust God with her life. It would have been natural for her to know that her path was to do God’s will and to give to God every detail of every day.
For us who are used to living amongst patterns of sin and mistrust of God it is not so natural to realise how good God is in our lives and to always say, (from today’s first reading):
“You are our Lord and God, you are worthy of glory and honour and power, because you made all the universe and it was only by your will that everything was made and exists”
Unlike the King in the Gospel today, we have a King who loves us despite our failures, who died in our place so that we could live, who gives us everything it is possible to give, including his own mother. Aware of this and our own frailty, we need to deliberately follow Mary in her surrender to God so that we too can know the full beauty of living for Christ the King.
