The Gift of our Children

Professional Standards and Safeguarding

“Truly children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb”
Psalm 127

Children are a gift from God; a gift to be treasured, a gift to be nurtured, a gift to be kept safe. The Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn cherishes the gift of our children.

Children have an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and protection from harm.

Guided by the Archbishop’s commitment to this understanding, and informed by the Royal Commission’s Child Safe Standards and the draft National Catholic Safeguarding Standards, the Archdiocese has developed a series of support documents to assist each Parish and faith community in implementing the Archdiocesan Safeguarding Policy.

The Parish Safeguarding Volunteer pilot was launched at the 6pm Mass on the 30th November 2019 at St Vincent de Paul Church in the South Belconnen Parish. The Parish Safeguarding Volunteer will work closely with the Parish Priest, parish secretary and Parish Pastoral Council in ensuring and maintaining the safety of our children and vulnerable adults within the parish. The Parish Safeguarding Volunteer will be formally supported in this role by the Manager of the Institute for Professional Standards and Safeguarding.
