“Makes Sense”

“Francis, man of God, left his home behind,
abandoned his inheritance, became poor and penniless,
but the Lord raised him up.”

Francis became “poor” so that he could be “raised up.” That makes sense.

What doesn’t make sense is the pursuit of poverty in and of itself.

Over our 4,000 year history, we Jews and Christians, have tried to eliminate poverty. We have tried to create wealth and distribute it justly. That makes sense.

We try to eliminate “material” poverty through “spiritual” poverty. That is, we orientate our private property and private initiative towards the common good.
