Something special at Curtin

LED by retiring parish priest Fr Tony Frey, four years ago the North Woden Parish of the Transfiguration entered into an arrangement with Palliative Care ACT and Southern Cross Care.

Hosting a Day Hospice and using the parish centre at Curtin each Friday, the parish provided care for homebound people with life-limiting health conditions.

From the start, the rostered volunteers came along every Friday and carried out their allotted tasks.

Soon however, the local community adopted the ‘day with a difference’ program in a range of unexpected ways.

Parishioner Bernie Ayres said the project closed at the end of September for reasons not related to the parish.

He wanted to acknowledge the good that occurred over the years.

“What developed over the four years, was an interesting experience in parish community development, worthy of sharing,” he said.

“Something special was happening at Curtin. There was no one trigger, just a contagious good vibe.”
